Yanny has been having some difficulty with his wheelchair and his communication device. The wheelchair tray is not staying in the appropriate place and Yanny is hurting his arm on the brackets. His seat cushion is also tearing and he is getting a sore on his leg. Unfortunately with the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome if there is anyway for Yanny to hurt himself he will. What a
frustrating life to be fighting against your body all of the time. We finally got Yanny to the wheelchair clinic to get the appropriate wheelchair parts ordered so Yanny's wheelchair can get fixed. The process is so long and frustrating especially since Yanny has no other position than lying down when his wheelchair is broken. Currently the wheelchair looks like we got if from the dump with towels taped all over the wheelchair to prevent Yanny from hurting himself. The Dyna-Vox is not holding a charge which means we will have to send the device in for repairs. What a bummer for Yanny to lose his voice! Again the repair process and even deciding who will pay for repairs can take months. I often wonder how parents who don't speak English well, or those with learning disabilities, can handle the Medi-Cal/CCS billing process.

Yanny had a great summer. He attended summer school and then was all over the community participating in every summer activity we could think of. Yanny also practiced using his communication device, Dyna Vox, daily. One of our helpers, Gabriel, spent many hours this summer programming it. Yanny loves to be able to communicate with others. He definitely is showing us just how smart he is on a daily basis. Yanny has returned to Sowers Middle School as a 7th grader this year. He was ready for school and is already developing new pages on his device to be able to talk to his friends at school.
April 2009
Yanny celebrated his 12th birthday this month. He had two birthday parties! Yanny celebrated with his biological mom and half siblings and he celebrated with us at home. Yanny loves a party so he was very happy to have two in his honor. Yanny continues to have supervised visits with his biological mother once a month. Yanny loves to visit with his biological mom and half-siblings. He clearly understands that these visits happen once a month and that he will always come home to us. Do to his past including abuse and multiple placement changes, Yanny used to get anxious about visiting anyone else's home.
Yanny continues to do well in school. He tries hard and is eager to please. Yanny has fewer episodes of crying at school and less spitting as he has become more comfortable. Luckily he has had the same instructional aide supporting him for the past two years. Consistency with the people who support him, really helps Yanny to be less anxious and thus less self-abusive.

November 2008
Yanny's adoption was finalized in early September! We were so excited and so was Yanny. After the proceeding Yanny kept telling the judge "thank you!" over and over. It was very cute! After the adoption we all went out for a big breakfast at Yanny's favorite restaurant, I-HOP. After breakfast we went to the toy store
where Yanny picked out a few Sponge Bob toys. All in all it was a wonderful day.
Yanny has also been using his Dyna-Vox daily at school and at home. He loves this system so much that he literally cries when he has to take a break and allow the Dyna-Vox to charge. Yanny enjoys being able to communicate more efficiently using both his oral speech and his communication system. Everyday Yanny is demonstrating his ability to learn new vocabulary and to use his system in new and innovative ways.

July 2008
We are still waiting for a court date to finalize Yanny's adoption. Due to factors beyond our control we still have not secured an adoption date, however we are hopeful that Yanny's adoption will be finalized by the end of summer. In the meantime Yanny is having a fantastic summer. He is attending summer school half day then going out in the community in the afternoon. This year Yanny has been able to access Wild Rivers more freely. In the past he has only been able to go to the area with the sprinklers while sitting in his wheelchair. This year, our family helpers figured out a way for Yanny to lay in an inner tube and float along the Lazy River. Yanny just loves this! He is so relaxed that he doesn't even have to have his hands and arms restrained. We are so excited that Yanny can enjoy Wild Rivers and the water activities like his brothers. We will definitely have to get some pictures of Yanny at the water park this summer!
May 2008
Yanny finally was approved for a augmentative
communication device. We were very excited to see
the ease in which learned how to use the device and
move about the system using two switched mounted
under his wheelchair tray. Yanny was very serious
during the various training sessions he had with the
device. He could work up to 90 minutes without a
break. Having this communication system will help
Yanny get his needs met more efficiently as well as
help him communicate easier with his family and
friends. Once the system arrives, which could be
several months from now, Yanny will be able to use
his voice and the Dyna-Vox together to communicate
with all people in every one of his environments.
This will definitely reduce Yanny's daily
frustration with not getting his message across to
people who are unfamiliar with his oral speech. We
look forward to watching Yanny become more and more
proficient with his new communication device.
February 2008
Yanny has been doing very well since he had the g-tube put in. He is less stressed out about eating and is able to keep from getting so thin with the Ensure supplement. Yanny hasn't even had a cold since his last hospitalization! This of course is great news, since his health can be a little fragile as he is susceptible to upper respiratory infections.
Recently Yanny was assessed for an augmentative communication device. He did very well and proved to be a very focused and hard worker. Yanny was able to concentrate and work for up to two hours without much down time. Yanny was able to use his hands fairly successfully as long as his arms were restrained. He even was able to make isolated finger movements with little effort. This control will allow him to access a device easily. We hope to find a funding source for an augmentative communication device as we definitely feel this would enhance Yanny's social life and reduce his frustration when using his oral speech exclusively.

November 2007
Yanny has been out of the hospital and feeling much better for a little over a month now. While in the hospital Yanny received a g-tube to help supplement his caloric intake. Yanny still eats by mouth by now is able to take extra fluids and nutrition by g-tube as well. Since being discharged Yanny has gained about ten pounds which is excellent! An interesting situation happened when Yanny was discharged from the hospital. he stopped all of his self-destructive behaviors. He no longer used his hands to grab at himself or others, his spitting stopped entirely, and he didn't use any bad or negative language. For about a month after his hospitalization Yanny did not require any restraints during the day or night. Recently some of the behavior has returned and Yanny is now back in restraints about 40% of the time during the day and all night long, just to be safe. We are not sure what happened and why the behaviors suddenly disappeared for a month then almost as suddenly reappeared. Still Yanny can be showered and toileted with the assistance of only one person at the moment, prior to his hospitalization it took three people to assist with the same tasks. We are hopeful that Yanny will be safe out of his restraints a period of time every day and that the reoccurring behaviors will not come back full force. In any case we are obviously extremely happy that Yanny made it through the hospitalization and it back home and feeling great!

September 2007
Yanny has been in the hospital since the beginning of the month. He started feeling poorly during the recent heat wave. When Yanny refused to eat or drink we took him to the Walk-In clinic. The Walk-In Clinic sent Yanny home with an antibiotic diagnosing a ear infection. When Yanny did not look or feel any better the next day we took him to the emergency room. After admitting Yanny to the hospital it was discovered through blood work that Yanny's kidney function was not good. While Lesch-Nyhan does effect the kidneys, this revelation was a surprise to everyone as Yanny recently had blood work that looked good. Yanny has also been extremely healthy since joining our family. The blood work also revealed some muscle wasting which is not consistent with this disease. Yanny's unusual blood work results has the medical professionals scratching their heads. No one has any idea at this point why Yanny's blood work shows muscle wasting and we are all hoping that Yanny does not have another disease besides the Lesch-Nyhan. Right now we are anxiously waiting for Yanny to be discharged home.
July 2007
Yanny is attending summer school for the first five weeks of summer then he is off to a few day camps. Yanny has seemed to settle in to the Silcock Family household very well. Yanny loves all of the daily activities, he especially loves going to the movies and out to eat. Yanny enjoys his brothers and they are very engaging with him. Yanny enjoys watching the boys ride their skateboards and take Karate lessons. Yanny is involved with MYART Children's Theater and will start rehearsing for the next play in September.
We are still struggling with ways to help Yanny sleep more comfortably and safely. Yanny wakes-up throughout the night and is uncomfortable. It takes at least two people 10-15 minutes to get him in a comfortable and safe position. We have joined specific Internet groups looking for other families who have children with Lesch Nyhan Syndrome. We are hoping to learn from other families successes.
April 2007
Finally!!! Yanny joined our family officially on his tenth birthday! What a great birthday present! We had a nice birthday party on Yanny's group home then we packed everything up and moved Yanny's to our home. Yanny is very excited about joining our family and so are we. Yanny loves having Saul as his roommate. Yanny enjoys Saul's guinea pigs especially when Saul sets them on Yanny's wheelchair tray. Yanny also loves "helping" me with the breakfast. Yanny is in charge of making sure everyone uses their napkin and clears their dishes when they are finished eating. Yanny loves being a big brother and especially enjoys being the "boss."

March 2007
There has been some "red tape" type delays in getting Yanny officially placed with us. We are now looking at placement date during the end of March. In the meantime Yanny is spending a couple of afternoons and every weekend with our family. On the weekends Yanny is participating in the MYART production of "Seussical." Yanny loves the rehearsals and is starting to make new friends with the other participants. Yanny is also enjoying the other activities that our family does over the weekends. Last week he went to see The Russian American Circus at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center, and next week he will see a children's play at The La Mirada Theater. Yanny is also looking forward to a "snow day" in Big Bear.
Thanks to a donation from "Adaptations by Adrian" Yanny will have some very warm socks that will be easy to layer and get on and off when he goes to the mountains. We also want to thank "Adaptations by Adrian" for some wonderful shirt protectors that Yanny can use when eating. Check out this company's website:
WWW.AdaptationsByAdrian.com for adapted clothing for person's with special needs!

February 2007
Yanny will officially join our family in the middle of February. We are so excited! After three months of visits we are all ready to make the transition! Yanny is already calling us mom and dad and referring to the boys as his brothers. Yanny's group home staff and administrator have been extremely supportive of the placement, greatly reducing any anxiety Yanny might have about the move. We have been trained in all of Yanny's special health and safety needs, and Yanny is showing increasing comfort letting us do his care. While we wait for him to move in, Yanny continues to join the family after school and on weekend outings.
December 2006
Yanny (9) has been visiting with us on almost a daily basis as part of the transition process. He lives only a few miles away and his group home staff are very flexible so arranging visits has been super easy. Yanny has attended several Christmas parties with the family and went to the Huntington Harbor Boat Parade with a few of the boys and staff. Yanny says he enjoys hanging out with the boys playing video games, going to the mall, and other activities. Yanny is a very social boy so all of the action around the house doesn't seem to throw him, in fact he likes to be right in the middle of it. We are as excited as Yanny about the match!
