CONGRATULATIONS Nikolai!!!  Today Nikolai passed his drivers test on the first try!  We are very proud of Nikolai.   He worked hard all summer to improve his driving skills and it really paid off.  Jim and Nikolai celebrated his success with a nice breakfast at I-Hop and then car shopping.  Jim and Nikolai picked out a 1993 Lincoln which fit Nikolai's lanky size and his budget.  Nikolai is looking forward to driving himself to school for the first time tomorrow.

August 2005
Nikolai enjoyed both sessions of Camp Bravo this summer. Even when the entire camp had to evacuate due to a local fire, Nikolai was a trouper helping everyone at the camp get their personal belongings before going down the mountain. Nikolai was also very helpful with Mathew and Michael as it was their first time at camp. Nikolai is spending the last two weeks of summer taking surfing lessons. Nikolai was the first in our family to actually stand-up on a surfboard. After completing these lessons, Nikolai's surfing skills should really take-off.

This summer Nikolai has completed hundreds of hours of behind-the-wheel drivers training.  Jim drives with Nikolai almost everyday and almost every where. Nikolai has even driven to Big Bear and back three times. Nikolai is an excellent driver and should have no problems passing his drivers test this September.

June 2005
Nikolai had another great school year.  He is now officially a junior in high school.  Wow!  Where does the time fly?  It was wonderful to sit through Nikolai's recent IEP meeting and hear all of the wonderful comments the teachers had to say about him. Nikolai is clearly a very well-loved student among his teachers at Huntington Beach High School. Nikolai continues to make progress academically and socially.  He is doing particularly well in math class. Next year he will be enrolled in an Algebra 2 class.

Nikolai continues to love art class and cooking class.  Next year he will be enrolled in a culinary arts program as his eventual goal is to be a chef.  Nikolai also got his drivers permit this year, after taking the test only one time!  Nikolai will be able to test for his drivers license in September 2005 and then will be able to drive himself to school.  In the meantime, Jim is making sure that Nikolai is getting plenty of practice driving all over town. By the time Nikolai is ready to take the drivers test he will likely have over 300 hours of behind-the-wheel time.

This summer we are looking for either cooking classes or culinary summer camps.  We still haven't found anything that strikes Nikolai's fancy.  Besides increasing his cooking skills, Nikolai is also planning to attend two sessions of Camp Bravo and private surfing lessons this summer.

July 2004:
Nikolai
(16)  completed his freshman year at Huntington Beach High School in June. He will be returning as a sophomore in September. Nikolai did very well this past school year. He ended the year with a 3.5 grade point average. Not bad for a teenager who is just learning English. Next school year Nikolai would like to take cooking classes. He is a wonderful chef and would eventually like to work in the field of culinary arts.

Nikolai attended culinary camp this summer for two weeks. He loved it! Nikolai has a natural talent in this area and we hope to help Nikolai continue to get training in the culinary arts. Additionally Nikolai attended filmmaking camp for three weeks.  During this camp Nikolai learned how to use a sophisticated camera and editing software. The camp counselors reported that Nikolai has an eye for film and recommending that he return to the advanced filmmaking camp next year.

Finally, Nikolai will return to Camp Bravo - Performing Arts Camp this year. This time Phillip and Alin will attend the camp with him. Camp Bravo is a wonderful camp for teenagers interested in acting and dance. Nikolai is looking forward to reestablishing some friendships from last years camp session.

In his free time Nikolai enjoys refurbishing and rebuilding old bicycles with his Grandpa Jim. Starting in September Nikolai’s next adventure is driver’s education!!
