In Loving Memory of BARRY DALE SILCOCK

From Barry’s Family and Friends:

“Barry was a great and fun-loving son. Barry and I went to several concerts together. I especially remember taking Barry to a PHISH Concert in Ventura. He wanted to arrive early, so we planned to get to the venue five hours early. Almost the whole way there Barry kept asking me to drive faster because he was worried that five hours wasn’t enough time him to “prepare” for the concert. Barry not only enjoyed a good concert but he almost always wormed himself backstage to meet the performers after the show! I loved spending time with my son he was always ready to experience all that life had to offer.” Jim Silcock

“I enjoyed watching Barry grow-up to be a fine and loving son, brother, and friend. He was lucky enough to have two families and many friends who loved him dearly. Despite his significant medical and physical issues, Barry experienced and achieved much more in his short lifetime than many other people even hope to accomplish. His tenacity and enthusiasm were inspirational. I will miss him more than words can describe.” Ann Belles

“No matter what, Barry was always happy. Although he couldn’t walk, he was always walking tall in his own way. I believe Barry is now with his sister, Christine. I know he is happier and no longer suffering or in pain. I will miss his sense of humor and rubbing his hands. He will always be in my thoughts.” Lore Hines

“Barry was a nice brother. He would share his movies and video games with me. He even let me go in his bedroom once and look at his CDs.”
Jarrod Silcock

"I met Barry when I was 2 and he was 3. I was lucky enough to get to experience and teach him many new and exciting things, I heard him speak his first words when he was four, I was with him the first time he saw a grocery store and found out where all that food really came from, and I played cat and dog with him the first time he crawled and was able to touch grass. It was amazing being able to teach him new things, but in reality he was a far better teacher and example to me and I will never be able to repay him and thank him enough for showing me a new innocent way to view the world, a way in which everyone is instantly considered a friend. I will always keep that with me. Thank You Barry."-
Your Student and Friend, Brandy Warden

“I have lots of brothers but my brother, Barry, always had the best haircut. Sometimes his hair was even purple and spiked up really high!” Jordan Silcock

“Sometimes Barry hated drinking his ENSURE at school. Frequently, to get him motivated, I had to tell Barry that Arnold Schwarzenegger drank ENSURE too. I would tell Barry that this was not because Arnold wanted to build bigger muscles but because Maria told him to drink his ENSURE! This always gave Barry a laugh and usually got him to drink his ENSURE! I tried to make Barry laugh everyday.”
Joe Yride --friend and instructional aide

“I am really going to miss my younger brother, Barry. He was a good man and a very good brother.”
Robert Silcock

“I remember when Barry loved Elvis Presley! I met Barry at his 11th birthday party when he had over 100 guests and an Elvis impersonator. It was so fun to watch him sing-a-long along during the concert. Barry always LOVED a party.” Hope Knott--friend

“I remember Barry when his name was ‘Barry Atkinson’. We grew up together. He joined our family when he was 7 years old and I was 13 years old. I was there the day he was adopted on March 3rd, 2003. I visited him almost everyday when he was at sick and staying at Kaiser Hospital. I am very happy that Barry is my brother. I will miss him.”
Christopher Silcock

“I will always remember when I took Barry to a vaulting (gymnastics on horseback) tournament in Ventura, California. Barry was about nine-years-old at the time. While waiting for his turn, Barry purposely sat down next to a very pretty teenager and said ‘Do you want to go out with me? I am a movie star!’ Barry was always a flirt!” Jovita Solorio--friend

“Barry was a good big brother to me. We liked to watch wrestling together. I loved him very much.” Javier Silcock

“I went to Las Vegas with Barry for his karate tournament. I was his roommate at the hotel. I knew Barry liked music, but since I am Deaf, I never knew how loud he liked his music. I learned that Barry LOVED his music very loud when the hotel security came to our room. The security staff thought Barry and I were having a very loud party when Barry’s music and his singing could be heard in the hallway!”
Robert Hanson--friend

“Barry was a movie star! I thought he was very cool.”
Ivan Silcock

Barry (19) It is with great sadness that we must inform everyone that our son, Barry Dale Silcock, passed away at Kaiser Lakeview early Sunday morning, September 19, 2004.  Barry had been in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for 120 days. While he was still healing from his surgical wound, Barry was actually slated to be discharged back home on Sunday afternoon.  Barry was very excited to finally be going home and it was so good to see a smile on his face again.  Unfortunately, at approximately 2:15 Sunday morning Barry complained of difficulty breathing.  Barry's nurse gave him an increase of oxygen but to no avail.  Extensive efforts to resuscitate Barry failed.   Barry passed away at 2:45 am Sunday morning.

We had a memorial service for Barry on Monday, September 27th, at Saddleback Church in Lake Forrest.  As Barry requested, this service was an up-lifting memorial of a life well-lived!

Thank you again for all of your thoughts and prayers during Barry's long illness.  We believe that Barry is now in a better place where he is no longer suffering or in pain.

Also a BIG thank your for visits, telephone calls, gifts, letters, cards, and e-mails to Barry.  He was so appreciative of the attention.  Your concern and thoughts meant the world to Barry and to our whole family.

These pix are of Barry in the hospital when he was presented his diploma. He got it a day before everyone in his class, so I guess you can say he graduated 1st in his class!

Jim Keating (director of special ed) and Pat Goldman (inclusion specialist) from the Huntington Beach Union High School District did the presenting. His bio mom was there too.

AUGUST 28, 2004  Barry has been in the hospital for almost 100 days.  He has primarily been in ICU during his hospitalization.  Barry really appreciates all of the e-mails, letters and prayers. Recently Barry's spirits have been up as there is talk of his discharge.  The doctors believe that Barry can finish his recovering at home if he returns to the Surgical Center three times a week for dressing changes.  While we are certainly nervous about the prospect of caring for Barry at home with his huge unclosed surgical wound, we know that if Barry could recover at home his mental health would be much improved. Kurtis and Barry's nursing staff will begin training on Barry's new medical care with the Kaiser staff. We are also excited that the hospital staff have started having Barry sit in his wheelchair a few hours each day.  Until recently Barry been in bed this entire hospital stay.  This is all excellent progress and we are starting to feel hopeful that Barry may make a complete recovery.

JULY 2004:   Barry graduated from Edison High School this June.  Because he was hospitalized during the time of graduation, the high school administration staff provided a small ceremony at Barry's hospital bed.  It was an emotional event.  Not only were we in attendance but so were Barry's biological mom and brother.  Barry has been so sick this entire year but luckily he had earned just enough credits to graduate with a real high school diploma.  Although he was quite weak, Barry was delighted to hear that he was the FIRST graduating member for Edison High School's Class of 2004 (He received his diploma two days earlier than everyone else!).  We are very excited to say that Barry will be graduating with an official high school diploma.

MAY 2004:  Although Barry has been sick much of this year, he was out of the hospital for several weeks during April.  While he was home he participated in the song writing workshop directed by Dave Nachmanoff.  Barry wrote an awesome song called "Punk Rocker."  Dave has already recorded the song professionally and is only waiting for Barry to be discharged from the hospital so Barry can add some of his own vocal tracks.   Barry's song will most certainly be featured on the Silcock Family CD.  Dave reports that the CD is in full production now and should be ready for distribution by November 2004.

This is Barry's adoption ceremony which was featured on the Discovery Health Channel's "Adoption Stories" series. This program is still airing if you ever get a chance to watch it be sure to let Barry know what you think.
